In a CityLand article, Yale professor and urban planner Alex Garvin criticizes the reduction of privately owned public space and public sidewalks resulting from installation by building owners of such “security” features as planters and bollards. Garvin’s solution: let owners pay rent to the City for the land they are appropriating for such features.

The National Endowment for the Arts has announced the award of a grant to The Municipal Art Society of New York, in collaboration with Advocates for Privately Owned Public Space, to support the development of this website. The grant period commenced this June, 2013.

The New York City Council approved the Water Street POPS zoning amendment on June 12, 2013.
The City has provisionally approved Nancy Slotnick’s application to install her Matchmaker Cafe in a Water Street privately owned public space. Under a proposed zoning amendment, such installation would no longer violate POPS zoning within the Water Street corridor for the next six months or so. APOPS@MAS has invited Nancy to provide ongoing commentary on her project and here is her first entry, published in the Huffington Post.
